The line,“Life can get wild when, you’re caught in the whirlwind lost in the world when you're chasing the win” (Aiko). The harmony and the melody of the song in itself enlightened me along with the mellow guitar strumming and simple drum beat in the background of the song, but many of the lyrics also resonated with me. I needed something that I could zone out to and “W.A.Y.S” became that something. For me, thinking about everything I had ahead of me and that many of the decisions I made at that moment could affect my future was a great deal to handle.
I discovered this song around the time of my senior year in high school, specifically around the time when the pressure of college and what I wanted to do with my life was the greatest. Whenever I need a pick me up and the song either comes on, or I turn it on I instantly become happier. “W.A.Y.S” is a significant song to me personally because of its message and the way it makes me feel. Everything she sings in these lines is pretty straightforward, she is stating that having patience is important and just letting go can help regain peace because in the end everything will work out therefore, it is important to smile and be happy in the meantime.
You have gotta lose your pride, you have gotta lose your mind just to find your peace of mind, you have got to trust the signs, everything will turn out fine. The bridge of the song is where she sings about what she has gained from her experiences stating “If there’s one thing that I learned while in those county lines, it’s that everything takes time. At the beginning of “W.A.Y.S” it mentions the same time but it starts off on a much happier, almost a dream-like state of mind when she mentions the angels walking up to her door. In “3:16 am”, Jhene sang about the hardships of her life, depression, addiction, and so forth. This signifies 3/16, the date Jhene Aiko was born, and can also be connected to another song from a preluding album, in which the song was titled “3:16 am”. The initial part “at forty four minutes to four” has meaning behind it in itself, in relation to Jhene. Told me he thinks that I should know that there’s no slowing down, as the globe spins ‘round and ‘round” (Aiko).

My favorite verse of the song is the first one, which begins with the lines “At forty-four minutes to four an angel walked up to me door, opened the windows to my soul. The main lines of the song, are “you gotta keep going”, repeated many times throughout the first and second verses, and “why aren’t you smiling?” which is the hook of the song. With “W.A.Y.S.” the lyrics are simple, yet significant. In many of her songs, she sings about her journey and what pushes her to keep going. When I first discovered Jhene Aiko, her soothing sound coupled with her lyrical content intrigued me. After listening to “W.A.Y.S” a few times, the song quickly became one of my favorites because of the emotion in the singer’s voice and the message behind the lyrics. by Jhene Aiko, which is an acronym made up for “Why Aren’t You Smiling?”. The lyrics are really what can influence your mood because of the meaning behind them.Ī song that has significance to me, because of its lyrics is “W.A.Y.S”. The heart of a song is made up of its lyrics and it is what I enjoy the most.
But listening to music, for me, is more than just a catchy beat, or a few nice riffs. When I listen to a song that I enjoy, I can’t help but scream the lyrics to the song as I am in the car, or procrastinating when I should be doing homework or studying. For me the music I listen to, mostly, provides me with a sense of happiness or enjoyment. It can also be used as an outlet, relieve stress, comfort you, or take your mind off of something you are struggling with. It can influence your mood, upset you, uplift you, or change your mood in other ways. Music can be something so simple yet so influential at the same time. When you think about it, a song can consist of a simple drum beat or guitar strum and nice vocals to create a harmonious sound that is pleasing to the ear.
